Why we Love and Hate Resolutions…& Still Keep Trying!

Here’s that tricky week again! This is the week that apparently most people give up on their New Year’s resolutions. All those exciting ideas sadly abandoned. All of those treadmills gathering dust. Are you still hanging on?

We are innately drawn to improve! When we see something we like, we yearn to learn it or imitate it in our own way. This is why Pinterest has become huge as a source of inspiration! This is also the reason why there are social media “influencers” telling us about their “skin care routine” and everything else under the sun! We are consistently seeking to do things better, faster, with less effort and more beauty. If we are healthy and have our our survival needs met, a lot of spare thoughts wander into how to improve our work, relationships, organization, physique, and etc.

Sometimes, if you are anything like me, you may overthink and err on the side of perfectionism. It can be exhausting. Luckily, a slew of prickly experiences have taught me small steps towards the grand goal are the most beneficial. They are better than a ridiculous lunge for the unattainable. Certainly, consistent albeit small improvements tend to win the race! Shout out to the tortoise for showing us the way! Running a marathon can start with jogging a block or two!

However, on the other side, there is a part of us that longs for a big nap! Why not be content with what is currently our reality? Why rock the boat for anything better or shinier? Who has time or energy for anything more?

Both sides can exist! Actually, somewhere balanced between the two sides of either “lofty goals” or “take a nap,” seem about right for navigating a happy life.

Take the nap! Then eat something nutritious. Now here you are at the pivotal point! (Don’t open your phone and watch reels endlessly or scroll through the lives of others.) The next step is to make a plan for a reachable goal (or two) that would bless your life and the humans around you! We are not meant to be stagnant! Take for example the 25 year old adult living in his parent’s basement! There was a halt to progress! There is no joy in the lack of betterment.

So, let’s mix it up!

A nap will probably do you good, but that will be short-lived. Don’t be the 35-75 year old adult stuck in their routine! Adding in a new hobby, reaching your weight loss goal, learning a language, trying a new recipe gives you that amazing satisfaction of growing! The joy of learning and doing better are delicious! Think of how we applaud a baby’s first steps, or a young child’s soccer goal! Growth is worth celebrating!

We are beings of light, and light craves to grow and create. Creating, learning and growing are the things that spark our imagination and fuel joy! Bring on the JOY!

So, if you are looking to discard your resolutions, maybe take another look. There was something that had you excited about them. Maybe it’s time to rework them into a smaller more doable goals. You’ve got this. Don’t give up! We are with you!

Here’s a few additional ideas for encouragement!
