3 Things to Do With Your Kids Before You Get Back into the Swing of a New School Year

As July comes to a close, people are busily buying school supplies and looking at the school year ahead. Regardless of how we feel about the upcoming school year–if we view it with excitement or dread–there are a few things that we can do to help our family have a successful year!! Here are 3 things we do to help us with our mind shift from summer to school mode!

1.Review the amazing things you have enjoyed over the summer!! This is a really fun activity if you traveled a ton!!! While our summer this year was filled with more jobs and service, there was plenty of fun peppered in there as well. This activity could include looking through pictures together or pulling out the calendar and reminiscing about the things you’ve done. Jotting some notes about your experiences in your journal will help you and your kids remember the fun and the growth they experienced this summer and will give them something to look back on long after the sun has hidden its face behind the clouds of winter.

2. Make goals individually and together!! We are big fans of making goals around here!! They enable us to see the progress that we’ve made and keep us working toward improvement. A word of caution. It is important that we help our kids when they are new to goal making and encourage them to make goals that stretch them, but don’t break their confidence. In speaking with my oldest about the upcoming school year recently, he said something that struck me. He’ll be a sophomore this year and he said, “I just don’t think I’ve always had the right motivation to achieve my goals. This year my goals seem more important to me.” So there you have it! Help your kids find goals that are important to them…and will benefit them!

3. Help them see what they have to look forward to. If your kids (or you–HA!) are dreading the beginning of school, make a list of the things that they have to look forward to. Sports, new teachers, or plan a fun excursion for fall break or Thanksgiving. It can be a bummer to let go of the easier schedule that summer often affords, but routines are good to get back into and holidays are coming too!!

These years are busy, hard, beautiful, and fleeting!! We’re just trying to be intentional about how we invest this time!! Bring on the school year!!
