The Power of Choosing to be Helped

This is just a friendly reminder that we can make a difference in the lives of other people. Even if we feel like they’ve got really complicated things going on in their lives. Even if WE’VE got really complicated things going on in our lives. Even if we don’t feel appropriately equipped. Even if we feel like we lack, are inadequate, can’t possibly make a real difference.

After the tornado that came through our city (yes, I’m still talking about it. Natural disasters kinda get stuck in your head) there has been a lot of rebuilding going on. A lot of waiting. A lot of replanting of trees that have fallen. The other day I walked outside to find my 4 year old helping my 70 year old neighbor with smoothing out the dirt where his beautiful ash tree had stood. My little guy saw that our neighbor was outside working, ran to our garage, grabbed his snow shovel–because it was the first tool he saw–and got to work. Our sweet neighbor chatted with him and let him work along side him. I am grateful that my little guy chose to help and that my neighbor chose to let him. My guy brought what he had and did his best. Even though at first glance the tool he brought seemed ill-suited to the task.

Sometimes when I’m busy getting my own stuff together I forget to ask for help, or forget to allow others to help when they see that I stand in need. There is strength to be had in allowing others to lend a hand.

I hope that I can remember to run to help at the first sign of need, and to also allow others to do the same for me, even if they bring a little snow shovel to my pile of dirt!
