Last Minute Effective Family Night Ideas for the Win!

Family Night is one of the best traditions to have for creating a feeling of togetherness, coordinating your activity calendar and overall connecting in your family! If you want to start this beautiful connection there are details here. This idea packs a powerful punch for creating a feeling of a team!

Ideally, you are prepared a couple days ahead with a great lesson for your group, but if today is the day and you need some ideas, we’ve got you! Here are some last minute ideas for a lesson or activity to make your family night effective tonight!

  1. Scripture Stories: Start with what you know and apply it to your life! For example: Jesus washed the feet of the disciples. Through this He taught us to love one another: Service is the key to love! Now, if you want this to be effective: Wash the feet of one of your family members (visuals are huge!) OR go as a small group and secretly clean your neighbors porch (sweep & wash windows -7 minutes) Putting the scriptures into action is one of the best family night activities! Here’s a link for scripture stories if you want more ideas!

Additional scripture ideas: The parable of the lost coin! Hide a dollar in the room where you will be having family night. Start by discussing this parable and how the woman looked diligently. Then let your family loose to find the hidden dollar. Finders keepers in this case! After the dollar is found, gather everyone anew and let it spark a discussion about the preciousness of souls and why God keeps us in his sight! We are worth far more than a coin (or dollar). May we also take good care of each other.

Here’s an amazing lesson on gratitude that comes together in minutes! This small activity can be tied in beautifully with the scripture story of the Ten Lepers.

2. Videos: This link will give you hundreds of videos based on high values and scriptures. We have used many of these videos and they lead into meaningful family discussions. Take the few minutes to preview the video and see what thoughtful questions or scriptures you can add!

3. Ted Talks! Did you know you can search ted talks based on a value? Google “Ted Talks on honesty” and watch them start to appear! We have stumbled across some great talks helping us to have an uplifting and valuable family discussion. Don’t forget to conclude with a challenge! Just a simple, I am trying to be a good human challenge. For example you could say: “This week, let’s commit to be truthful everyday.” Or on another topic: “Let’s commit to compliment 1-2 people a day for the next 5 days!” Imagine the power of this kindness from your little team! Then follow up at dinner a couple times during the week. We are overall trying to train and become good humans!

4. GAME NIGHT! If it has been a crazy, stressful week, then maybe declare this night’s family night 30 minutes of your favorite family games! (More here as well!) That will hopefully build some joy and relieve some stress. Hooray for games!

Family Night

No matter what your Family Night may look like, perhaps a perfectly procured moment of learning, or a simple 12 minutes in which every one is in the same room connecting and planning together. Claim that one night a week to continue to build your family team and memories! This was incredibly powerful in my family growing up and is still amazing with my family today. Imagine what you can do with your family! Someone has got to make it happen! You’ve got this!
