Finding Light and Blooming There! Learning from the Amaryllis!

Have you had an Amaryllis bulb before? I highly recommend the experience! You don’t need any gardening expertise. You simply need to add a little water occasionally and watch this amazing plant bloom. These massive bulbs are available in the month of December and often come in a little pot with dirt, making this incredibly easy.

A friend gave me an Amaryllis for a Christmas gift. I was excited because I have grown one before and knew their incredible speed at which they develop and the stunning bloom at the end. I eagerly brought it home, took off the paper, added water and waited.

And waited…

Ten days passed, and I wondered if maybe I had gotten a dud. However, there was a smidgen of green barely rising above the brown bulb. It was so small, I thought it was imagined. My daughter confided that a visiting two year old, who we love, had given the bulb a hearty tug and so perhaps the plant was no longer viable. Yikes! However, I watered it, left it in a sunny location and hoped for a bloom.

There is something magical even in the anticipation. The hope that something better will come out of this little pot of dirt.

A few days later, the green began to emerge so slowly. The green stem was about two inches tall for a while. When my favorite two year old visited, I put the bulb out of reach. I’ve learned, if you want something to last, you have got to protect it. (Ooo I LOVE this talk on this!)

Suddenly, the green stem coming from the bulb was over a foot tall! Amazing! In just a few weeks, with a little water, sunshine and protection from tiny predators, this bulb was rising to it’s potential. My whole family began to comment on the daily progress!

Now look at this stunning beauty! Apparently the bloom will last for a couple weeks. I smile every time I see it. All the humans in my life, who are in my care, also need a little nurturing…well a lot. They need pure light and truth, protection from people who would pull them up by the roots and they need room to grow. This can be a tricky balance.

I wish it was as easy as just adding water, but consistent care over time makes for a good environment for humans to grow. I’m going to keep doing my best to nurture, despite my flaws, and hope and anticipate for beautiful blooms of talents, and attributes that will add to the loveliness of this world.

Definitely get an Amaryllis bulb, there is such a tremendous awe to the whole experience!
