Looking at Life Through the Sideview Mirror

My 5 older kids are in school during the day. My youngest is 4. He’s in joy school one day a week. He is my buddy on all of the errands I have during the day. He goes with me a couple of times a week to teach Spanish. He does the laundry with me and the dishes. He goes to the library with me. I have had at least one little buddy with me for the past 14 and a half years, sometimes 2 buddies. It becomes a part of life, always having a little companion.

Yesterday when I was driving home from an errand, I stopped at a stoplight and looked at my sideview mirror. I was pleasantly surprised to see my little guys’ hand in the mirror and was struck with how small it appeared! He had asked me if he could roll down his window. I unlocked the window control for him and told him to go ahead. And in true 4 year-old fashion he rolled it up and down, up and down. Occasionally, to my delight, I’d hear him giggle in absolute glee and would glance back to see that he was sticking his hand out the window to feel the wind rushing by. At 30 degrees, it was COLD!! But he just laughed and laughed, which, of course, caused me to laugh along.

When I saw his sweet little hand in the sideview mirror, however, it totally caught me off guard. A flood of emotion hit me. “He is so little,” I thought. He is constantly telling me how he is so big, and I’ll agree with him. But this new view of his little hand put things into perspective for me. “Things may be closer than they appear,” suddenly read, “Little hands will grow faster than you think.” Don’t blink, my friends! Hold those little hands a little longer, and let them be little, even when they seem like they’re getting big. That includes my little 14 year old, who will soon be taller than me. Enjoy it just a little more, if you can. Those little hands get big fast!
