Adding Light to the Season: Be The Good!

This year has been incredible! Incredibly bizarre, unpredictable and yet still beautiful! Life takes crazy unexpected turns and we must adapt. Blessed are the flexible, for they won’t be bent out of shape.

This year during COVID, I had my first little grandbaby born to my son, an amazingly joyful event. We adore him, he is undoubtedly the family celebrity. Also, my sweet daughter was married to a great guy. It was beautiful, hectic and wonderful, full of kind friends and new memories– even wearing masks.

I also recently took my husband to the emergency room for the first time in his life, with a bad reaction to COVID. Luckily it was short lived, and he is back to full health now. I know you all have your own crazy 2020 stories to tell: some beautiful, some tragic, and some still unfolding.

This year has been incredible and it’s not over yet!

As we approach the Christmas and the last holidays of the year, let’s add a little good. Let’s shine a little!

The Amazon delivery guy just came to my door, and when he saw me open the door, he immediately picked up my packages to hand them to me, then politely opened the screen door for me. Beautiful! 20 extra seconds of his time spent in kind human interaction. He could have left them on the ground for me to pick up, but he choose to add a little bit of kindness and light. This is goodness. Let’s be like this guy!

We have dozens of interactions everyday, some on-line, some over the phone and some blessedly still in person. Smile more! Even if it’s with your eyes, because your face is covered with a mask. Your words, however limited, make an impact. Point out the good people are doing! There is LOTS of good! If someone looks terrific, tell them! You have no idea what kind of day they are actually having. Your small kindness might be just the lift they need, just the good they need to see in the world. Here are a few easily accomplished ideas for spreading light.

  • Put away someone’s cart for them at the store
  • Let a person merge into traffic with a smile and wave
  • Forgo the chance to pass on gossip!
  • Grab the door for someone
  • Say Hello!
  • Ask “how are you?” and wait for the answer
  • Listen actively (what a gift!)
  • Give 10 sincere compliments today, even by text
  • Look for the good in that person who is a challenge for you
  • Tell that person in the mirror what you like about her (she already knows what you don’t!)
  • Tell a knock knock joke to a kid
  • Laugh at their silly joke as well (this is pure medicine!)
  • Practice a few jaunty eyebrow raises that communicate despite a mask
  • And don’t forget to tell the people you love that you really do love them

Alright, this list is short! It’s just a springboard! I’m saying, let’s flood our day with a few extra moments of kindness. Share your light. I love your light! Your light is a reflection of the God from whence you came. When you are at your best, you are a blessing to this world. Share it today! I will too and together we can add a true sparkle to the season.
