5 Things My Kids Look Forward To For General Conference

General Conference is upon us, and that means our church listens to a broadcast in which we are enriched and uplifted by the word of God!! It’s a great weekend…and can also feel long for the littles!! So we do our best to make it special for our kids! Here are 5 ways that we make General Conference weekend something to look forward to!

1.Rolls!!! We used to only make cinnamon rolls for the occasion, but one year I decided to make orange rolls and my kids LOVED them!! We have also made raspberry rolls which are quite tasty as well!! I’ll let my kids vote on which type we’ll make and put someone in charge of making the frosting. My older kids are now at the point where they help more than they hinder the process, and that is a beautiful thing!

2. Bingo!!! I realize that this is a well-loved tradition among many families, but it is a great way to get the kids to pay attention. Sometimes we do bingo with different tie patterns, whether a speaker is wearing glasses, or what colors they are wearing. Sometimes we do bingo with different subjects mentioned or music that is included. Whatever the focus, we give them something to work toward that helps them glean a little more from what is shared. Sometimes we’ll do a variation of this and have the kids listen for a specific word in a talk and count how many times it was mentioned in that talk. We have also had the kids stand up when they hear the word and wait until the word is mentioned again before they sit down. Choose the word carefully and be careful to use this game wisely! Sometimes the kids can get a little too antsy with it, and sometimes it’s just the right amount of movement!

3. Dry Beans!!! We will buy a couple bags of different types of dry beans and empty them into a bowl. We get out different measuring spoons and cups and let the kids play together and pretend to make things while we listen to the speakers. They also will create different shapes and animals with the beans–I am always impressed with the creativity expressed through this medium. We only do this during conference, so it feels like such a treat for them to play with.

4. Temple or nature walk in-between sessions!!! We live 7 minutes from our local temple and will often drive there to walk around and get out when conference isn’t in session. We also will go to our open space and burn off some energy on a family walk so we can get out and enjoy the day before hunkering down for another session. The movement really helps us refocus when the time comes!

5. Express excitement about Conference!!! This may seem like a small thing, but if we express our excitement for conference, then our kids will pick up on it as well! Seeing that we look forward to hearing from our prophet and the apostles has an impact on our children. Let them see us prepare for conference. Let them hear us talk of Christ so that they may also feel open to speaking of Him as well.

Happy Conference Weekend!!!
