The Benefits of Having a Pen Pal (or at least writing letters) as Explained by an 11 year old

Hi! I’m a guest writer today at Sharing Secret Somethings! My mom asked if I could share a few things that I have enjoyed about writing letters to people. I’ve always enjoyed writing and receiving notes! Sometimes I write notes and hide them on the pillows of my sibling’s beds so that before bed they get a fun surprise! In first or second grade I started writing letters to my aunt. Then something magical happened–she wrote me back!! I received a letter in the mail!!! I was SOOO excited!! I ran to my room to write back to her right away! I was hooked!! I am still pen pals with her now and I’m in 6th grade. I’ve kept her letters because they are special to me. When I’m sad I can read them again and feel happy.

And now comes a few of my favorite benefits of being a pen pal!!

  1. Writing letters to people and hearing about how it has made their day to receive it!! It makes my day to find out about it!
  2. Writing letters has helped me come closer to family and friends. I have gotten to know other people more because of it!
  3. I have to/get to practice patience!! After I’ve sent a letter to someone I am always asking to get the mail! On days I’m sure I’ll have received one, I haven’t!! Then, when I least expect it, it will come and it always brings a smile to my face!
  4. Writing letters is a great thing to do when I have nothing else to do! When I feel bored or want to create I can always write a letter to someone I know.

I don’t always get a response to the letters I send, but I’m glad to have sent them anyway. And if I don’t have an address, I can always sneak it inside a backpack or on a desk or on a front porch!

So, this Valentine’s day I am planning on sending a few letters, I think YOU should too!! Thanks for reading!!!

Mom’s addendum:

I just wanted to include a few benefits that I have seen from my daughter’s letter writing.

  1. Writing letters has improved her punctuation and spelling–while it’s not perfect, it has improved!!
  2. She’s had to be more thoughtful about the content of her letters. Learning to answer questions and learning to ask questions so the recipient can see a good way to respond to her letters.
  3. Watching her learn how to handle patience and anticipation is so good–especially in this world of instant gratification!
  4. It has taught her (and me, anew) the significance of small acts of kindness–and in the end, we all want to be good humans, how great that there are so many simple ways to do it!

At the beginning of the year she wrote a couple of notes to her new music teacher and left it on her desk. Her teacher wrote one back and left it on a desk for my daughter. She was ELATED!!! The notes helped my daughter form a connection with the new teacher and helped the new teacher feel welcomed to the school.

She has written notes to teachers and left them on their desks. She has written notes when she’s taken care of lawns or dogs for neighbors and said, “Thanks for giving me the opportunity to take care of your dog! Welcome home!” She has even hidden notes in suitcases for people to find later. Her notes and letters are always well received, and that happiness has increased her desire to do it.

Letter writing is a forgotten treasure–the art of the written word is still there to be enjoyed, if we just choose to take the time to do it.
