Caroling Sardines: A Fun Twist on Traditional Christmas Caroling

Growing up, every year my family went Christmas caroling! My mom would make these beautiful bread wreaths drizzled with icing, we’d plate them and head out the door in 2 different cars (as there were 11 of us!) We’d each get to choose 1 person to sing to. We would usually choose a good friend, or a teacher from school or church. I can remember vividly practicing the songs we would sing on the way to each house. We’d sing 2 songs, one as soon as we knocked on the the door, or rang the doorbell, while they were coming to answer the door. Then we’d sing a second song when everyone was at the door and stood to listen as they smiled and we shared our happiness to celebrate Christ’s birth. Then we’d hand them the plate of yumminess, and bid them farewell as we sang, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” on our way back to the cars. I grew up in a family of singers, so everyone would harmonize as we stood and sang at the door. I LOVED this tradition! It brings a smile to my face every time I think about it.

Now that I’m all grown up (or so people have told me) we have continued this tradition with my own family. My kids all look forward to it, just as I did. We usually go a couple of nights during the Christmas season as it can get busy trying to carve out enough time to make all the cookies and deliver and sing to all the places in one evening. And, honestly, we love it, so it doesn’t bother us to go on a couple of different nights and prolong the magic!! In the last couple of years, though, we have included one night of Caroling Sardines!! Do not be alarmed, no fish are involved!!

Here’s how it goes! We carol to a house and then invite that family to join us in caroling to the next house! Sometimes they can’t, and that’s ok, or sometimes only 1 or 2 kids can come, then we bring them along and invite more as we go!! It is a blast to get a big group together and enjoy the Christmas spirit as we grow and sing in larger groups!! The trick is to make sure you have a couple of extra plates of cookies/treats so that you can go to a spur-of-the-moment house if someone that joins you has someone that they’d like to visit!

Often the newcomers will only stay for 1 additional house, but sometimes we’ll get a whole other family to join us the remainder of our caroling, and it’s great!!

So, if you haven’t gone caroling before because you think your numbers would be too few, go to a friend’s house first and ask them to come along!! It is SO fun to bring people together and enjoy singing Christmas songs for the masses!! So, join us in bringing this beautiful tradition back!!! Come carol with us, or maybe just grab your shoes when you hear the doorbell ring this season–it could be your neighbors hoping to share some light and borrow your voices for the next house!! Happy Holidays!!
