5 Essential Life Lessons Learned from Participating in Music!

Are you wondering if you should encourage your child to participate in 5th grade band? Have you considered learning a string instrument no matter what your age? What does learning music do for humans?

Amazing things it turns out!

Music is powerful. It can be calming and soothing. When you learn to play a musical instrument, you can play music to match your mood or transform your emotions. There was a study (actually multiple) conducted on the effects of music on the relief of pain. Guess what? It actually alleviates pain! That can happen from just listening to uplifting music, but how amazing is it to be able to play music and provide relief for others? The ability to deeply calm yourself and bless others! That is powerful!

Learn to be a part of a community. If you learn to play the viola, it can be stunning! However, put that viola in with a symphony and listen to the utter sweetness to the senses when the violins, cello, bass and viola play in harmony. What a treat! When a 5th or 6th grader begins learning a string instrument, it often feels like an anguish inducing squeak fest. Yet with time and consistent work, even a few weeks or months, music begins to emerge, boosting the confidence of the student! Learning to create harmony helps a student to celebrate the talents of others, as well as appreciate their own.

Learning music helps you learn many other things! Learning music teaches you rhythm helping you to understand dance better. Learning music helps a student to comprehend math. Listening to classical music improves the ability to study, absorb and interpret information. Learning an instrument helps with eye-hand coordination. My daughter’s second grade teacher began playing classical music during the student’s lunch hour and found that the students were calmer for the afternoon classwork.

Vividly learn small and consistent effort creates great change! There is an adage we have been saying for decades: “Practice makes Perfect.” However, truthfully, practice makes improvement. A 5 year old can begin playing the piano, and within a few weeks of 15 minutes of practice a day, that five year old will be able to play a few melodies easily. This is a life lesson we want for all of our loved ones. Small consistent practice equals improvement in any category in life! Do you want to improve your penmanship? Practice. Do you want to improve a relationship? Practice Kindness and forgiveness! Do you want to do better in math? Practice. Learning music can certainly improve your work ethic.

Music is a universal language. The music your 8th grade clarinet player is practicing may very well be from a composer in Italy who doesn’t speak any English. Perhaps more likely, the music your piano player is learning may be 280 years old from Vienna. This is a different language and a vastly different time. We had two choir exchange students from Germany come and stay with us for a few days. We had a bit of a language barrier that included lots of smiling and simple phrases, but we ended our time with them by attending their choir concert, which was magnificent! They sang music from many different countries, composers and times. We understood completely.

There are multiple additional reasons why music can be an amazing addition to your life! Check out this article & this one too!

My 18 year old son who plays the piano beautifully wanted me to add, “girls love it.”

That is true as well. 🙂 It is easy to admire talent!

So pick up that instrument! You can learn it. Encourage your child to take a chance! Sing a little more! You may find 15-20 minutes a day of effort will yield amazing results.
