3 Ways to Help our Kids Make it to the End of a Task Successfully!!

The school year is coming to a close and we are in planning and prep mode. There are orchestra concerts, piano recitals, final projects, and big tests in the next few weeks. Do you feel it? Because I can! I feel my kids antsy anticipation for the summer that is juuuuussssst out of reach. I am doing my best to stay focused as well. I teach Spanish at 6 different elementary schools as an after school program and all the students are just a little less focused than they’ve been the rest of the year. I find myself giving reminders more frequently to all of the kids in my life. “Almost there, guys!” “Focus just a little longer!” “It’s gonna be awesome when it’s done!”

Here are 3 ways that we can help the kids in our life (as well as ourselves) make it to the end successfully!!!

1.Remind them of the end goal!! Whether it’s a good grade for which they need to study, or a better time in a race, it helps all of us out to remember why we are engaged in a task that may be feeling stale. With the end goal in mind we can all dig a little deeper to get there.

2. Break the task up into manageable time slots or parts. We all need this one! Instead of breaking off too big of a bite and being miserable trying to manage it, just take smaller bites. Don’t feel like you can work for an hour? Make it 30 minutes. Don’t have 30 minutes in you? Do 20 instead! Manage that time, set an alarm and get to work!

3. Give them something to look forward to. If we can just see that something is at the end of the road, we can keep walking. You know what I’m talking about! A fun day ahead. A family outing. A movie. A sweet treat. Your new favorite book from Amazon or the library, whatever it is put it out there as a reminder of the sweet taste of victory!

This list is not exhaustive, but it is manageable, and that is what we are going for here. Just help us get there with more of a smile on our faces and less of a grimace!! We can do it!!
