While We’re Busy, Let’s Not Forget to Love Our Kids!

Summer break has started and I find myself frantically searching for any camps that I should have signed my kids up for a month ago–HA! Truth be told, I LOVE summer. I love the sun, I love the water, I love the freedom to choose our schedule! I love making goals with my kids and seeing them accomplish something in so short a time! I love trying new things and seeing them rediscover their friendships with their siblings. The end of the school year is crazy hectic, but the ease of the summer is a delight! We have some fun vacations planned this summer, including a family reunion which is always so fun for my kids to reconnect with cousins, aunts, and uncles. Often people will ask me if I’m overwhelmed by having all of my kids home, and I guess the answer is “sometimes, but I mostly like them, so it’s good!”

While preparing to go to the mountains overnight I was cleaning house, packing, and instructing my kids to do the same. My oldest had a fever. Like a scary high, never-ending, no meds are touching it, fever. At first I was feeling bad for him, and after almost 2 days I started to feel true concern–as in, “am I going to need to take you somewhere for this cuz you don’t look good, concern.” Suddenly all my preparation didn’t matter. It’s amazing how our perspective can change in a split second. I got him a popsicle. The stress of having a clean house had left me. I knew there were things that needed to get done, but nothing trumps the importance of my kids’ health. Suddenly, the day camps and vacations seem trivial and all I want is for my kids to be healthy and know that I love them. I wish I could say that I remember this all of the time, but life has a way of helping you reprioritize things.

So, while I want to get things ready and enjoy our vacations and summer plans, I’m planning anew to hug my kids just a little longer, tickle them just a little more, and ruffle their hair as I walk by them so they know that they are an important part of my world, and I see them. Because before I know it, I’ll be spending my summers longing for these crazy busy ones with popsicle mouths to wipe and little hands to hold and I’d like to enjoy them while they last!
