What to Say to the Airline Attendant When the Plane is Late & Other Tricky Situations in Life!

Have you ever heard the saying “Blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape?”

I actually say this to myself sometimes. (I’m sure I’ve mentioned it here!)

It reminds me that while I rarely do the splits these days, I can still go with the flow in a difficult situation. It teaches us that while there are plenty of tricky moments in our everyday lives, we can try to make it better, but in the very least not make it worse!

Rarely is there a difficult situation that is not made worse by complaining or blaming. This holds true in the airport, in our schools, and most assuredly in our families. I think it is safe to say, this is a life principle.

We are becoming a more emotionally intelligent people, or at least we are discussing it more openly. We are aware that the feelings we experience do not then need to be thrust at another human. Although I think we still throw our own personal strife, angst and craziness all over social media and that doesn’t seem to be turning out so well. At least the current consensus is we are highly divided as a nation and generally just as humans.

On a smaller note, in our own microcosm of the world, in our family, I have noticed that emotions tend to run a little higher in that 20-30 minutes that everyone is trying to get out the door in the morning. If someone can’t find their homework or keys during those last hurried minutes, it can be a possible grenade of pent up anxiety. Multiply that everyday stress by the month of May or December where there are multiple extra projects and finals, and we could trigger a personal volcanic eruption with some terrible fallout. AND these emotions are contagious to the other humans in the room. Other members of the family who feel the fallout then take that with them to the different places they go. Messy.

Looks like attitude really is everything! All those coaches continue to say it to every imaginable sports team, and it turns out what we choose to think and dwell on controls a big potion of the outcome.

So what does one say to the airline attendant when the plane is late and you have urgent places to be?

How about?

“Thank you for your help.”

Or something kind like “That’s a great color on you.”

Or if you can muster some humor, share a harmless joke. Laughter is amazing for dispersing tense emotions.

The plane being late is not the fault of the airline attendant. The keys being misplaced is a typical human error. Many of the daily bumps and bruises that inconvenience our day turn out to be tiny tests of our character and humanity.

While we are on the topic, turns out “Blessed are the peacemakers” as well!

Now, I wish I could tidily wrap this up right there. However, I just need to add, this doesn’t mean be peaceable when there is bullying. Make some noise and stand up when the situation needs an advocate.

May we have the wisdom to know when to joke and when to put our foot down: in the airport, on social media and in our homes.

Let’s get out there and be amazing today!
