Today is Not My Birthday–and Other Reasons to Celebrate!

Over the last couple of weeks my 3 year old has been saying in a grumpy tone, “Today is not my birthday.” I then find myself responding with, “Nope, not today, but didn’t we have so much fun on your birthday,” or “That is true, it is not, but somebody else’s birthday is coming up, isn’t that fun?” It does not matter what we are doing, he will say it at random. This, of course, has led me to wonder what brings it on? What is he looking for? Does he just want presents and cake? And, while that very well could be the case, it seems like, more than anything, he just wants a reason to celebrate. And while I do not think our kids should have a party every day just for living life, I do think we all need a reason to be excited–something to look forward to! I mean, isn’t that what we discover in Alice in Wonderland?

This song has come to mind several times since hearing my sweet little 3 year old lament that it is not his birthday. It has helped me remember to celebrate the ordinary day, and to start our family dance parties back up. During the height of the pandemic we had a family dance party on Friday nights. Also, a family ditch day!! Sometimes on birthdays we will take our kids out of school to go celebrate in a fun way, but celebrating just a regular Tuesday feels great too!! (preferably one without tests involved 🙂 )

It is important to me that my kids learn to work hard and contribute to the community, but not forget how to play!! If you haven’t read Dr Seuss’s, “The King’s Stilts,” you really should! It teaches the importance of knowing how to work hard and also playing once work is complete!

So, find yourself a pair of stilts, a tea party, or a chocolate cake, and celebrate!

Even if today is not your birthday!!
