The Best Way to Help Kids Feel More Gratitude

We’ve talked about secret somethings. We’ve talked about service bingo Now it’s time to talk about one of our favorite things to do as a family–random acts of kindness!!! Did you know that one of the BEST antidotes to selfishness is service!?! Focusing on the needs of others instead of our own is just the exercise this world needs to feel a little more gratitude!!

When my husband and I were dating I noticed that he often recognized the needs of others and offered to help. He’d hold the door open for someone walking with their children, pull out extra seats for someone that needed them in a meeting, or quickly offer to carry something in for someone that needed help. I LOVE this eye for service that he has. Seeing his example made me realize that I lacked this great quality! I wanted to learn to recognize the needs in others as well. I now try to see others and their needs. I am not great at it, but better than I once was! We have done our best to make this a priority in our lives as a family and the best way to get better at something is to practice!!!

Fall is a GREAT time to give this a try!!

So, here are just a few ways that we try to practice this principle of service in our corner of the world:

  1. When my kids are outside raking leaves they always go over and rake the leaves in a neighbor’s yard. We also do this with shoveling snow!

2. Gathering all the stray shopping carts after our grocery trip! We make it a race, not wanting to be seen by other people, and careful not to hit cars or other people as we go!!

3. Leaving a kind note on a stranger’s car, or a neighbor’s and letting them know how you admire them or wishing them a great day!

4. Ding Dong Ditching!!! This is an absolute favorite around here!! We make treats and choose houses to leave them at…ring the doorbell and RUN like crazy!! Some of us are a little quicker than others, but we’re sure not to leave anyone behind!

5. Buy a gift card and give it to the cashier!! This always elicits a great, shocked reaction!! Give it a try, it is a great way to lift someone’s day! Likewise, leaving a hefty tip for a server is always welcome!

6. Pick up trash in your neighborhood or park! If not you, who?? Uncover beauty everywhere you go!

During our dinner discussion, we enjoy sharing the service that we’ve given others, and have all been uplifted as we’ve heard the ways in which others have served our people!!

As we approach the time of year in which gratitude gets to shine, may we all recognize the random acts of kindness that are just waiting to be done and watch as our gratitude swells!!!

Happy Serving!!!
