Need Some New Ideas for Service? Try Service Bingo!

When was the last time you played Bingo!?! Yeah, I didn’t remember either! HA! At church this past week we made Bingo sheets and passed them out for everyone to try and serve other people a little more. It has been AWESOME!! My kids have been excitedly checking out what acts of service they want to do that day and then happily coloring each box as they’ve completed them. It has been so great to hear of their success in lifting other people and how they have also felt lifted as a result. I wanted to share some of those ideas with you and give you a PDF with a Bingo sheet for it!

My 11 year old daughter, in particular, has caught the true spirit of service this last week. On Friday there was a big hail storm that completely trashed the beautiful green leaves on the trees. It was such a bummer to see the carpet of green all over the driveways and streets. On Saturday morning we began sweeping and cleaning up the mess in our yard. My daughter came outside, surveyed the damage and asked if she could go across the street to borrow our neighbor’s leaf blower to help clean up. I agreed. When she came back, after I showed her how to use it, she proceeded to blow the leaves from the driveways of 5 or 6 neighbor’s houses. She came back tired and happy. I was so pleased to see her looking outside of herself to help out. Now, to be fair, this particular daughter is naturally service-oriented. However, this Bingo sheet has really opened her eyes to more ways to help and seek out service. As a mom, I REALLY want to instill in my kids the desire to proactively help those around them.

Here’s how it works. You print off the Bingo sheet, place it on the fridge…or wherever you will see it easily throughout the week, and then choose which boxes you will complete each day. Mark the box with a pen, tell everyone in your family at dinnertime what box you’ve completed and how it went. If you made treats for a neighbor, let everyone know who and what treat!! Bonus if you share how amazing you felt as you served! Also, enjoy the excitement that your family will experience as a result of hearing of the service that you have done. Likewise, be prepared to light up as you hear how your children have interacted and served others in meaningful ways!

Have a treat picked out, or a pack of gum if you’re not excited about treats. Plan a special family movie night or other activity for when everyone’s gotten a bingo, OR have the celebration once everyone has gotten a blackout!! Have your kids write about their experiences in their journal. OR take a minute and write a note in their journal about how you enjoyed seeing their excitement to serve as they completed their Bingo sheet!!

These small acts will bring your family closer as you are united in serving others. It will also, of course, be felt by those around you!!

This is a great way to get into a holiday spirit, to help change attitudes in your home, or to foster gratitude.
