Summer Fun For Kids in the Kitchen

My oldest daughter just had a birthday and that chick LOVES to bake! My husband found this fun book for her! She has used it several times and has been sharing the cookies with friends and family. While we end up using a little more flour and sugar than normal, it has been such a great learning experience for her in the kitchen–plus we get to enjoy the fruits of her baking!

Here are 5 reasons to get your kids their own cookbook to use this summer!!

1.They will learn trial and error! My daughter tried to make fortune cookies for the first time and it was tricky. After several attempts and realizing the cookies were all too thick, she asked my husband for help and they figured it out together. They turned out great and it was an awesome learning experience for her!

2.They will learn to substitute and be flexible if they are missing ingredients. My daughter made canolis for the first time as well. We usually always have whipping cream, but she realized once she was putting ingredients together that we were out. So she created a different filling, which turned out delicious anyway! Learning to adjust is such a great life skill!

3.They will learn to plan ahead and understand the importance of a budget. She has wanted to make cookies for large groups of people before, which takes more ingredients, which in turn costs more money. So she has chosen to earn money in anticipation of a project and I have let her put money toward it so she is aware of what each project requires.

4.They will learn the gift of time: Baking takes time and the results can be delicious. When we spend time putting something together for someone else, that service softens our hearts and teaches us to love others.

5.They can invite friends over to enjoy in the fun and find someone to share it with together–and no screen time is necessary!!

Bonus!!! This will allow them to have another creative outlet! My daughter really wanted to create the watermelon cookies included in this book. When she discovered that they were flavored with almond extract, she decided to create a different version of the cookie: orange slice cookies baked with orange extract instead. They turned out so adorable and delicious. This was such a confidence boost for her as she shared these cookies at school and many asked her for the recipe!!

Encourage your kids to plan out a meal, or a fancy dessert for your family or their friends and invite people over for them to share their talents with others!!

So get in that kitchen and start baking up some memories!!
