The Amazing Spinach Smoothie! A Busy Mom’s Best Friend!

Have you ever seen those green drinks posted by crazy nutritionists? Well I’m about to tell you why a spinach smoothie can become your new best health friend! This green smoothie is a sincere pal to all of us who are trying to nourish our families and maintain good health!

Spinach is amazing for eyes, skin, bones, regulating blood sugar and the ability to help your body flush out free radicals (meaning a great ingredient to help prevent cancer). If I were to send you out into the web looking at the nutritional benefits of leafy green vegetables, particularly spinach or kale, it is easy to see why they are superfoods! Spinach is loaded with vitamins A, C, folate, iron, potassium, calcium and more! Bottom line, spinach is like a super multivitamin that is easy for the body to use!

Did you know one cup of spinach has fewer than 10 calories and packed with the above named nutrients?! Did you know ONE little chocolate kiss has 23 calories without any clear nutritional benefits? Two cups of spinach is considered a serving and that serving is honestly loaded with nutrients your body needs to thrive. So slice up some mini peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes and form a delicious salad. When my kids were little, I called it rainbow salad because it had so many colors and they honestly loved it. It’s all about presentation.

OR if you need a short cut and your kids will NEVER agree to a rainbow salad, then try a smoothie. They are fast, delicious and packed with nutrients amazing for all of us!

What do you need for a spinach smoothie: A high speed blender (like Vitamix, Blentec, Ninja or the like)

  • Spinach (Fresh)
  • Banana (for creaminess in the smoothie)
  • Cold Water and a bit of ice

Now those are the ingredients I would always want to have on hand for a spinach smoothie, but I always add a few of these are well:

  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blueberries (or any berry that you enjoy)
  • Pineapple
  • Orange
  • Lemon (about 1/4 of a lemon is delicious add to the smoothie)
  • Red Grapes
  • Mango
  • Apple (of many different varieties
  • and etc!

If you are new to trying Spinach Smoothies, I would suggest the following combination that can serve 2-4 people. This combination will have enough natural sweetness that children and squeamish adults will readily enjoy it!

  • 3-4 cups of spinach (I never measure, I just fill the bottom 1/3 (or more) of my blender with spinach
  • 2-3 bananas
  • 1 cup of pineapple, (can be fresh, frozen or canned)
  • 1 mango OR around 20 red grapes
  • 2 cups cold water
  • 10 ice cubes

Blend these ingredients up in your blender until frothy and incorporated. The Vitamix takes no more than one minute to achieve this. Pour the smoothie into cups and enjoy! Hooray for superfoods that are delicious. You can create countless varieties of the spinach smoothie by mixing up the fruits and spinach! You can add avocado for additional creaminess. Add some Kale (start small, with one cup for example as there is a bit of a bitter flavor that often accompanies Kale).

Sometimes when I am making a rushed dinner for my family (due to concerts, volleyball or whatever), I will also just whip up a green smoothie! That way we get the delicious and wonderful health benefits from fresh leafy greens and fruits. Make a spinach smoothie to go along with “breakfast for dinner” or grilled cheese sandwiches! It easily triples your nutritional gain over many of the traditional dinners provide.

My 2 year old grandson loves bread and tortillas. Okay, so apparently simple carbohydrates are right up his alley, sounds like a pretty typical human to me! He vehemently turns away from most other foods. However, he will drink a spinach smoothie! That right there is a total win!

We should be consuming 4-5 servings of vegetables a day. Half of our plate for a meal should be fresh vegetables and fruit. Have you noticed when you go out to eat in many restaurants, unless you are actually ordering a salad for dinner, there are very few veggies included in the meal. Even less in a fast food restaurant.

Let’s make our homes different! Let’s take care of our people in lots of ways, including the easy add of a spinach smoothie!

Enjoy!
