Our Memories are Meant to be Made and Remembered

We just came back from an awesome family vacation! We went to Washington DC and New York and explored all the significant monuments and landmarks that we could fit in during the week that we were away. Vacations are so great for a recharge and different pace for you and your kids–but that’s not this blog post–that’s a post for another day! This post is about the memories made and the memories that will be remembered from our trip! My 12 year old daughter chose to bring her Instax Fujifilm Camera (affiliate link) and her journal with her. She had been saving up her film in anticipation of this trip. When we came to any significant landmark or experience she’d ask me to take a picture of her in front of it. She took pictures with her brothers, or with me or her dad. Then, at the end of every day, after she was all ready for bed, she’d take out her pictures and line them up on the bed. Then she’d write about everything we did and saw. She totally reviewed everything right there with her little souvenirs. By the third day of this ritual I said to her, “You are going to remember this trip better than anyone else!” She smiled and said, “Well, isn’t that what memories are for–to be made and remembered?” Right!?! Can I get an “amen!?!” My oldest then asked her if he could look through her journal when we got home so that he could remember everything we’d done and write about it himself.

Those words, “Isn’t that what memories are for? To be made and remembered,” really struck me. It made me consider how many things from my own childhood vacations and experiences I could have remembered if I had only taken the time to write them down even just a few sentences each night!

My daughter changed the way I want to prepare my kids for vacations. Now, I’ll make sure they include their journal in their backpack, or at the very least a notebook to write down the order of events, or their favorite gelato, or most shocking experience. Time has a way of morphing our memories. If we can at least capture a little message with the pictures we so easily snap, the memory will hold more. Because after all, our memories are meant to be remembered!!
