My Favorite Line From, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

We listen to Kidz Bop in my car a lot. If you’re unfamiliar with Kidz Bop, it’s a group of kids singing popular songs and omitting language or some innuendo from the lyrics, also the occasional Disney song. My younger kids love it, my older kids are probably getting tired of it, so I mix in some good ol’ 90s music to give them a break–Ha!

Anyway, lately, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” has been coming on regularly. We got tired of that song pretty quickly in my house as my kids repeatedly asked to listen to it when they first watched Encanto. We got a healthy break from it until it came on Kidz Bop recently. The other day as we listened to it, a particular line from Felix Madrigal stood out to me. I have been thinking about it ever since. Felix, if you don’t know, is the husband of Pepa–the chick whose emotions come out in the weather. He’s fun-loving and laid back–a stark contrast to his wife’s uptight personality. He acts as a calm to her storm. They complement each other well. I love Felix’s personality anyway. If you are lost at this point, maybe it’s time to watch the movie again, or at the very least listen to the song one more time–feel free to jump in my car, guaranteed I have somewhere else to go today and I am not likely to notice another person as it is always full of people!!

Here goes. The song starts with Pepa and Felix recalling their wedding day. As Pepa is describing the she felt that Bruno caused her to create a storm, she states, “Married in a hurricane!!!!” To which Felix follows up with, “What a joyous day, but anyway…” There it is. Amid the stress that his wife is feeling in reliving the description of the storm from their wedding he is caught up in remembering the day. Instead of focusing on how terrible the storm was, he focuses on the beauty of their union!! I love this line!! It is so short and packed with gratitude for their marriage! What’s more, he allows her to have her feelings too. He doesn’t try to downplay them or make fun of her, he just takes his moment to note, that it was a beautiful thing.

People!!! This can be all of us. It is so easy to get caught up in the hard and terrible things that happen and allow them to distract from the beauty in our lives. Let’s all be more like Felix!!! When things are crazy, seemingly out of control, or chaotic, let’s all take a moment to at least note the joy in it, and still make room for those that may be freaking out too.

And if you want a great way to teach this to your kids, check this out!

May you find the joy in your storms this week!!
