Amazing Decadent Chocolate Toffee Trifle!

This is pure deliciousness! Chocolaty richness with a buttery crunch of toffee. Truly so crazy good! We make it every Christmas for our extended family gathering and for whichever birthdays a kiddo may ask for this dessert! It makes a beautiful Easter dessert, Mother’s or Father’s Day or Happy Graduation or welcome home…you get the idea! It’s a celebration dessert! Hooray!

Somewhere along the way in life, my family decided we don’t really love birthday cake! It can be tasty, but it is often just only okay. So years ago, we started making other desserts in celebration of birthdays. This is one of them! Who said it has to be cake anyway? The birthday desserts became elaborate in some instances. However, this dessert is perfect for the deliciousness factor and the ease of how it comes together.

The trickiest part of this trifle is probably the making of the toffee, which is not too terrible. You just need a candy thermometer handy, and you will be admired shortly and people will “oooh” and “ahhh” at your marvelous skill. People ask…”how did you make this?” I simply smile and say “The power of butter of sugar!” There’s the truth of it right there people. Butter and sugar make a powerful dessert combination!

Alright, you CAN buy the toffee. You can purchase Heath bars or Skor bars at the store and if you have never had the dessert with homemade toffee, you may still swoon at the yumminess. However, if you have eaten this trifle with homemade toffee, you know how lackluster a Heath bar can be in comparison.

The homemade toffee is really the crown jewel of this dessert. Yum!

However, you do you! If you only have time to purchase the ingredients, you are still on your way to something amazing.

Equipment

  • A cake stand or trifle dish

Ingredients

  • 1 Box Brownies (prepared according to the directions) Should make a 9 x13 pan size. We love Ghiradelli (so 2 boxes of that!) Prepare brownies and let them cool. You will need eggs, oil and water for this step.
  • 2 Boxes Jello Chocolate Instant Pudding (5.9 oz size) Prepare as the box states. These are the bigger box. 🙂 Prepare pudding when ready to assemble dessert, after the brownies have cooled. You will need 3 cups of milk per box for this step.
  • 16 oz tub Cool Whip or Any Whipped Topping of your choice Let whipped topping sit on counter for 60 minutes to thaw before creating trifle.
  • 1 Batch Homemade Toffee OR 6 Full Size Skor/Heath Bars Break the toffee to a chunky sprinkle size
  • 1/2 cup semi sweet mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  • The first item you should do is make the brownies, let them bake and cool. Now get to work on the other items…
  • While the brownies are baking, make the toffee. (See linked post for Toffee recipe!) Play some fun music. The toffee will take around 25 minutes to make. Then let it cool in the refrigerator.
  • When your brownies are cool to the touch (maybe 90 minutes plus out of the oven) Then you are ready to assemble your trifle.
  • When you think you are within 15 minutes of assembling the trifle, prepare both boxes of the pudding according to the box directions.
  • It's best to have all of the ingredients ready to go: Cooled Brownies, broken up toffee, thawed cool whip all ready to assemble in your cake stand. (I've make a trifle before in a large glass bowl and it's also worked!)
  • Now have some fun. Scoop up some brownie and create a single layer in the bottom of the glass dish. It really doesn't need to be beautiful, because the pudding will cover it.
  • Add about 1/2 the pudding in a layer, trying to make it even along the sides for a pretty effect.
  • Next add a layer of 1/2 the tub whipped topping
  • Now add some chunks of toffee. Try to make sure there are no sharp pieces that could be tricky. Keep them small to medium and plentiful.
  • Next make an additional layer of brownies, pudding, whipped topping and toffee. You can create the last layers of whipped topping and toffee in a pretty manner.
  • Lastly, sprinkle the mini chocolate chips along the surface.
  • Chill in the refrigerator for 1-4 hours before your delightful celebration!
